The CFR technique — Cranial Facial Release

Written by Dr Alexis Robic · Studio Inné, Marseille

When the skull breathes again and everything else follows The CFR technique: craniofacial release for chronic pain and autoimmunity

Breath blocked for too long

Pressure behind the eyes. Sinuses that never really clear. A heavy head, a tight jaw, a neck that no longer turns freely. And sometimes, much further away: unexplained fatigue, a background anxiety, a body that seems disconnected from itself. At Inné, we regularly see women who have tried everything. Treatments. Medication. Therapies. And who have never heard about what their skull has to say.

The CFR technique — Cranial Facial Release — is often the missing piece.

The CFR technique: what exactly is it?

Cranial Facial Release is an advanced chiropractic technique developed by Dr Adam Del Torto. It involves a micro-insufflation of air into the nasal cavities using a small balloon, in order to mobilise the bones of the skull, palate and face, structures long thought to be immobile.

What CFR is not
What CFR is
A painful treatment
A gentle, quick technique
A conventional ENT treatment
A cranial chiropractic approach
A purely nasal solution
An overall craniofacial rebalancing
Only for sinusitis
Indicated for many chronic conditions
the breath comes in sinuses & sutures
Cranial Facial ReleaseThe bones of the skull are not fused: they retain a micro-mobility. The balloon reopens the nasal passage and, with it, the mechanics of the sutures.

What happens in a session?

The technique itself takes a few minutes, but it is part of a full session. A small balloon is inserted into each nostril, one after the other, and briefly inflated. This movement mobilises the cranial sutures, releases tension in the facial bones and restores the mobility of the craniosacral system. The sensation is intense, but brief. And what follows is often an unexpected lightness.

What science knows

1. The bones of the skull are not fused: they move

“Cranial bone mobility and sutural mechanics” Retzlaff EW et al., Journal of the American Osteopathic Association, 1975

Cranial sutures retain functional mobility in adulthood. Their restriction is associated with neurological, postural and visceral dysfunctions.

2. Nasal mobility influences the central nervous system

“Nasal airflow and its effects on the central nervous system” Eccles R, Physiological Reviews, 2000

Nasal airflow directly stimulates the olfactory receptors and limbic structures, influencing mood, memory, sleep and the regulation of the autonomic nervous system.

3. The craniosacral system regulates the whole body

“Craniosacral therapy and its influence on the autonomic nervous system” Upledger JE, Somatics, 1995

The craniosacral rhythm, a subtle movement of the cerebrospinal fluid, directly influences the functioning of the brain, the spinal cord and the entire nervous system.

4. Cranial tension is linked to chronic inflammation

“Cranial restrictions and systemic inflammation: a clinical perspective” Sergueef N, Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies, 2007

Restrictions of the cranial sutures can impede the circulation of cerebrospinal fluid and contribute to persistent systemic inflammatory states.

What we see at Inné

Level
Signs frequently present before CFR
Craniofacial
Chronic sinusitis, allergies, nasal congestion, facial pain
Neurological
Migraines, brain fog, difficulty concentrating
Postural
Forward head posture, neck tension, clenched jaw (bruxism)
Nervous system
Background anxiety, hypervigilance, sleep problems
Immune
Chronic low-grade inflammation, repeated allergic reactions
Energetic
A feeling of pressure or blockage in the head or throat
Gentle craniofacial release of the sinuses and facial bones, holistic care at Inné
When the sinuses clear, it isn’t only the breath that comes back. It is a clarity we had forgotten.

Who can benefit from the chiropractic CFR technique?

CFR is for anyone experiencing one or more of the following:

ENT & respiratory conditions

Chronic sinusitis that resists treatment, seasonal or year-round allergies, chronic nasal congestion, snoring and mild sleep apnoea, partial loss of smell.

Chronic pain & posture

Migraines and tension headaches, neck and occipital pain, bruxism and jaw tension (TMJ), unexplained facial pain, dizziness and balance problems.

Nervous system & overall health

Chronic anxiety and hypervigilance, brain fog and memory problems, deep unexplained fatigue, sleep problems, a feeling of intracranial pressure.

Autoimmunity & chronic inflammation

Hashimoto’s and thyroid imbalance, fibromyalgia and sensory hypersensitivity, polyarthritis and systemic inflammation, autoimmune diseases with a neurological component, a long medical search with no clear diagnosis.

At Inné, the chiropractic CFR technique is rarely offered on its own. It is part of a comprehensive protocol that includes myofascial, visceral, emotional and energy work, so that the cranial release can spread to every level of the body.

What we offer at Inné

You may have tried everything. The sprays. The antihistamines. The painkillers.

And still that lingering sense that something, somewhere, is stuck.

At Inné, we believe the body has a memory.

That cranial tension is not only mechanical.

That it also carries stories, shocks, silences, accumulated pressure.

CFR doesn’t only free the sinuses. It frees up a space.

A space to breathe, to think, to feel differently.

And sometimes, that is exactly what the body had been waiting for permission to do.
